Be the Change: Opportunities to use your ideas for innovation

This segment of the blog is devoted to opportunities for you to cultivate your ideas in innovation, global health, and development.  Postings may include contests, scholarships, fellowships/internships, and grants.  We will try to order postings by due date, from soonest to last.

Howdy class!  Dr. So posted on the "Announcements" section of our course Blackboard about the Dell Social Innovation Competition.  I also wanted to let you know about a more local contest, in the area of water and global health.


The UNC Water Institute, an academic entity devoted to innovation in water use and global health, is hosting a 2011 Art Contest.  I have copied the contest ad below.  If you are the artistic type, think about giving it a shot!

No matter where you are, water affects – and is affected by – the way people live their lives. The Water Institute at UNC continues to serve as a cutting-edge, 21st century center that provides global academic leadership in water, health and development in North Carolina and worldwide. Use your creativity to capture water through the theme of Hygiene: practices that promote health and healthy living.
Requirements
  • Subject matter of each entry must relate to the 2011 “Hygiene” theme
  • Two dimensional art, including but not limited to photography, painting, drawing, quilting
  • Pieces must initially be submitted electronically as jpeg images
  • Must be original, unpublished work
  • By entering, the artist gives the Water Institute at UNC permission to use their artwork for promotional, non-commercial purposes. Winning pieces will be used in presentations, publications, T-shirts, exhibitions and displays.
Awards include $500 for the winning piece, $250 for the runner up, and $50 apiece for honorable mentions. Winners will also receive formal recognition at the Water and Health Conference 2011, where the winning works will be exhibited. The competition will run until March 4, 2011 (and will be judged by the end of the semester). Prizes generously contributed by Dr. Stephen Morse.

APHA Public Health Fellowship (Master's Graduates)

Applications for the APHA Public Health Fellowship in Government for 2012 are now being accepted. APHA is looking for candidates with strong public health credentials who wish to spend one year in Washington, D.C., working in a Congressional office on legislative and policy issues such as health, the environment or other public health concerns. The fellow will have the opportunity to see first-hand how public policy impacts public health and to offer their public health expertise to policymakers. The fellowship will begin in January 2012 and continue through December 2012. All candidates must be APHA members, have a Master’s degree or a doctorate in public health or a related discipline. In addition, all candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, have five years or more of professional experience in a public health setting. Internships, graduate assistantships and residencies do not count toward the five year requirement.
